XMLTV – DSTV

Welcome to my XMLTV download page…

With MultiChoice (DSTV) not providing any EPG support for programs like MCE2005, MediaPortal and MythTV it is very difficult for users to fully enjoy their HTPC experience. MultiChoice is also known for bullying people who try to make EPG detail available for others and therefore it is becoming more difficult to get hold of good quality EPG data. Thinking about it the only solution that I could come up with was to create my own EPG files and not to be dependant on others. In the fight against the right to enjoy your HTPC in South Africa I have decided to also share my generated files.

Please feel free to communicate any problems that you might experience, and I will fix it as soon as I have the time to do so.

Happy HTPC’ing

VG

  2. Hi!

I use Mythtv at home and I was also getting frustrated by by not having a proper EPG. I have since learnt how to use XMLTV.exe using tv_grab_za on Windows.

But I do appreciate your attempts.

    Thanks

    Hi Mashilo

I have used tv_grab_za before and the problem that I experienced with it was that it was always outdated, and always missed some channels. Its primary source is MNET, and my findings have been that MNET is not reliable enough. Anyway, if it works for you then I’m happy….thanks for leaving a message.

    Many Regards

  3. Hi VirginGirl,

great to see some one else has taken up the challenge of providing us with an EPG. Thanks.

I use Mythtv on linux and was hoping you could provide the XMLTV files in a better way than in a Word document – I am unable to extract the zip from the document in OpenOffice.

  4. Hi

Thanks for the xmltv file – the other providers of DSTV xmltv files seem to have ‘gone away’. Something that would be really cool is if Categories could be included in the file – my reason for this is that I want to search the schedule (I have a C# app for this) for any Sci-Fi movies or shows and the best way to do this is to look at the Category tag …

    Thanks!

    Hi Jean-Pierre

I feel your pain and I would have added this if the DSTV-website included this on the same page as the schedules, or even if they had a link to another page with more detail that I could follow. I probably could find a way to link “movies” by using the movie name, but it would require a lot of coding as well as would limit the function to only movies and not “Series” and “General” programs, as it is not available on the site at all. The best I can promise you is that I will add it to my to-do list, and to try and get the time to code it….but it will not be very soon.

    Sorry :-(

  5. Hi

Thanks for your efforts …. if the ’silly people’ at Multicoice were a bit forward thinking then we wouldnt have to do this sort of thing!

I actually have a PVR and all I want to do is search for various keywords over the next x days so that I know what is coming up. Both the DSTV website and the PVR’s software SUCK at searching …

  6. Hi again

How often do you generate the file?

    —————————————————————

    Hi Jean-Pierre

Usually every two weeks…but I also use the same file, so if I see that it becomes outdated I also run an update.
